For a brief respite from Carnival, we decided to explore the naturaleza that lies outside of Sucre. The Cordillero de los Frailes is the mountain range that creates a beautiful backdrop behind Sucre. Our day-long hike started at Chataquila, where there’s a small stone chapel. As we continued on, we observed how the land drastically changed, from rugged rock formations to rolling hills featuring bright red earth. At two points along the hike, our guide showed us rock paintings that are supposedly at least 2500 years old. They look strikingly similar to some of our nephew Jackson’s primitive art work 🙂

While enjoying a picnic lunch at the base of a beautiful waterfall, we all unanimously agreed that this was our favorite part of Bolivia so far.
